Free Frank McWorter was born a slave, but planned his freedom for many years. He saved money, purchased his wife’s and children's freedom, and was the first African American to found his own town of New Philadelphia in 1836.
We the direct descendants of Free Frank and Free Lucy (Free Frank and Free Lucy Heritage NFP Corporation) are dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the graves, monuments, and grounds of the McWorter African American Cemetery located in Pike County, Illinois.
Today, the African American cemetery, currently on the National Register of Historic Places, and the final resting place of Free Frank and his family, is in dire need of restoration, preservation, and protection, and right now we need your help! We cannot do this without you!
The town of Parma in Monroe County, New York, creates historic marker in honor of Walter Vond for his work on the underground railroad in the 1850's! Vond family descendants visit the marker on its unveiling. As always:
